Lecture-Demonstrations
Einstein:
A Character Develops
When
Tom Schuch decided to produce and
perform, Einstein: A Stage Portrait, he knew
what most people knew about this famous man--he was a brilliant
physicist who turned the scientific world on its ear with
his famous Theory of Relativity. There isn't a day that
passes that you don't hear a reference to Einstein in some
form or another. So, why do it?
An
actor constantly makes important decisions about his or
her career that impacts what direction it will take in the
near and distant future. Tom made a decision to produce
and perform a play about the world's most famous scientist
and Time magazine's, Man of the Century, Albert Einstein.
To portray a man of this stature was a daunting and oftentimes
intimidating task. Why Einstein? But, more importantly,
how? Tom will take you through a very personal discussion
of how to produce, perform, market, and tour a one-man show.
The actors' life is about creating opportunities and consistent
work, and pursuing your dream. This lecture-demonstration
is of tremendous value to all actors young and old.
The
Actor's Job
You've
dreamed, you've studied, you've planned, and now you're
ready. So, what do you do? How do you start? Where do you
go? Who do you talk to? Marketing? Publicity? Are you kidding?!
I'm an actor not a business person! What does it mean to
pursue an acting career? What does it mean to be a professional
actor? What is the actor's job? Is it really based on who
you know? Whew! I'll take you through that roller coaster
ride I call dream-education-reality-success.
Master
Classes
Film
Technique
There
is nothing as unforgiving as the camera lens. It catches
every insincere thought, movement, emotion, and intention.
It can also be a revealing window as it penetrates the soul
of a character. This master class is designed for those
actors whose background is primarily theatre and will include
on-camera scene work with playback and discussion.
Commercial
Technique
Television
commercials can be an important and lucrative segment of
an actor's career. Preparation for this type of work is
often neglected but is as important as any other type of
acting study. The commercial acting style and technique
are different from both film and theatre. This master class
is an on-camera session with playback and discussion. We'll
take you through the whole process from audition to callback
to the job.
Comedy
Improv
As
a founding member of the professional comedy improv troupe
Surely You Jest, Tom spent three years performing
in venues as varied as theatres, city parks, conventions,
and bars. This experience for him ultimately became the
single most valuable acting "workshop" of his
life. It made him a better comedic actor as well as a dramatic
actor. Dramatic actor? Yes. This type of improv work addresses
many important areas of actor training: character development,
reacting not acting, physical development, vocal and emotional
interpretation, and timing. This workshop will allow the
actor/character to "relearn" how to allow their
body and mind to respond to what is around them in a natural
and instinctive way.
Oral
Presentation Coaching
Every
person who gets up in front of a group of people and speaks
is an oral presenter. This includes business people, teachers,
attorneys, politicians, scientists, etc. Oral presentation
is a neccesary but seldom practiced skill. The beauty of
oral presentation coaching is that an inexperienced speaker
can easily become an effective communicator and an accomplished
speaker can become better. Through their varied backgrounds
in acting, business, the legal profession, and oral presentation,
SPOLI's instructors will coach you through the development
of skills that take advantage of your natural abilities.
New skills will be acquired that make the amateur a pro
and the pro an expert.
